About

Hello! My name is Nailah (pronounced NI-EE-Luh), and I am the person behind ShySun Studio.

I’m a person that has many passions that I love to pursue, so I wear many hats. I’m an artist, an engineer, a software developer, a story-teller, a mentor, a teacher, a student, an actress, a director, and so much more. I tend to have a difficult time accurately defining myself, because its hard to cleanly categorize me into a box.

I studied Computer Science when I was an undergraduate student, and when I graduated, I went straight into a job in the tech industry. After all, that’s what makes money, so it must be the correct decision, right? But, through that experience, I learned that money isn’t something that motivates me. The pursuit of money isn’t what makes me grow or what makes me feel fulfilled. So, when I was laid off, I did a bit of soul searching. As much as I love software development, working as a regular software engineer in the tech industry didn’t make me happy-- instead, it made me feel burnt out. I had spent so much time going through the motions, doing what is supposed to be the correct decision, that I never stopped to examine what I wanted to do or what makes me happy.

So, instead of trying to fit back into that box, I’m working on paving my own path and committing myself to work that I know I enjoy. I know I’ve historically struggled to turn what I enjoy doing into something that will pay the bills, but I’m determined not to give up on myself. I know I’m certainly not the only one who feels, or has felt, the way I do. So, hopefully, when I figure things out myself, it can help others do the same.

Skills

Experience

  • I studied and earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from North Carolina A&T State University (2017 – 2021).

North Carolina A&T State University is a historically black college/universities in the US, and it has an incredibly rich history. It’s also the home of civil rights activists, visionaries, and trail-blazers. I’m proud that connection with so many excellent people.

While I was a student, I didn’t simply study. I was always heavily involved and active on campus, in the community, professionally and in terms of extra-curriculars.

NC L-SAMP STEM Community: As a member of this community on campus, I studied a degree related to STEM and collaborated with other students in various STEM majors.

Honors Program: Throughout my undergraduate career, I maintained good grades, consistently putting myself on the Deans and Chancellors list.

Mentorship and Leadership: Through several different organizations (Honors, ACM, etc.), I became a mentor to my underclassmen, giving advice in academics and networking, and introducing them to opportunities to enrich their academic careers.

Teaching Assistant and Tutoring: As a student, I also worked on campus as a tutor and a TA in both general studies (Math, Science, and Humanities that everyone studies) and Engineering Courses. As a TA, I specifically helped teach Computer Science Courses.

NSBE: I was a member of the student chapter of this organization on campus, participating in engineering and professional events.

ACM: I started as a member of the student chapter of this organization, but I progressed into taking on leadership roles. As Miss ACM, I organized community service and club events. As the ACM Women’s President, I focused on creating events, resources, and opportunities geared towards women in the organization. I also lead the Web Development and Game Development Special Interest Groups, teaching others these skills and guiding them to put it into practice.

Internships: During my years as a student, I also participated in an internship each summer, with Northrop Grumman, AT&T, and Lyft.

  • Lyft: After my internship with Lyft as a student, I received a return offer and worked for Lyft full-time as a Software Engineer.

Freelancing: I worked as a freelancer designing and helping to maintain websites, as well as occasionally taking on art and Live 2D rigging commissions.

Education: In 2022, I took classes to brush up my language skills in French, as well as starting to learn languages that were new to me, including Chinese and Japanese. I also took a course in Project Management in 2022. In 2023 - 2024, I went to a flight school and took aviation classes.

Tutoring: In 2023 - 2024, I started tutoring students in English, specifically in writing, essays, grammar and mechanics. I also tutored students in Computer Science.

  • I’ve done a lot that doesn’t quite fit into the box of things related to my professional career or education, but they are nonetheless important to me and worth sharing.

Young Diverse Artists Cohort: I, along with some of my friends, created a small organization that is focused on storytelling and art. Within this organization, we encourage each other to work on our creative projects, hold and participate in events that encourage others to hone their craft, and host creative and team-building retreats.

Event Planning: I have organized and hosted events for recreation, networking, and personal development over the ears. I have a series of events that I really enjoy hosting which encourages participants to work together to solve puzzles connected to a larger storyline, or simply enjoy immersing themselves in fiction.

Interviewing: At a book launch event for the book Mid-Air by Alicia D. Williams, at Park Road Books, I conducted a one on one interview with the artist and facilitated audience members to ask questions.
